Additional Information

Dorianna LEBLOND:

Notes:
From newspaper clipping in possession of autor (source unknown)

"Her corpse Mrs. Hector Carriere fell through the coffin during her funeral, when the bottom fell out of the coffin and deposited her body on the steps of Sacred Heart Church.

The coffin was being carried out of the church by eight pallbearers, when the bottom suddenly gave way. There are seven know pallbearers, Leo Devost, Francis Carriere, Omer Carriere, Joseph Carriere, Arthur Lachance, Eugene Roy, Rudolph Nadon. Perhaps the eighth was an employee of the McGuinty Funeral Home, who were handling the funeral.

Mourners screamed, women fainted, and men turned deathly white as the body of 250 pound woman plummeted from the creaking casket. Some of the 200 persons attending the funeral mass shrieked and fled back into the church. Meanwhile, the funeral directors and eight pallbeaters carried the body of 59 year old reverently to the hearse.

The bottomless coffin was left lying on the church steps while another one was rushed over from the funeral home. In due course the new casket arrived and the body was speedly laid therein. As the requiem mass had been completed, all that remained was for the remains to be committed to the earth in the Roman Catholic Cemetery."
