Genealogy Resources
The following is a list of genealogy tools I use to research
my family history. For a more detailed list of resources
available in Canada, I suggest Cyndi's List, or
Canadian
Genealogy and History Links.
- Canadian
Genealogy Center - Search tool for databases in Canada.
- Census of
Canada, 1901 - Search by geographic location only, it is not
searchable by family name. The digital images within this
database are copies of the original microfilm records held by
Library and Archives of Canada.
- Cemeteries of
Canada - Published listing of transcribed cemetery
records.
- Automated
Genealogy - A free, volunteer-produced online searchable
index to the 1901 and Census of Canada. Currently in the process
of indexing the 1911 census, the pages that have been
transcribed can be browsed by no search function enabled
yet.
- Family Search Internet
Genealogy Service (IGS) - While not specifically Canadian,
Family Search is the largest surname database in the world.
- Geographical Names of
Canada - A searchable database of geographical names in
Canada.
- The
Canadian County Atlas Digital Project - This is a searchable
database of the property owners' names which appear on the
township maps in county atlases for Ontario, the Maritimes, and
Quebec. These atlases were produced between the years 1874 and
1881. Township maps, portraits and properties have been scanned,
with links from the property owners' names in the database.
- World Connect
Project - The Rootsweb database of family trees submitted by
RootsWeb researchers.
- RootsWeb
Canadian Records - Searchable database of Canadian birth,
marriage, and death records.
- RootsWeb Surname List
(RSL) - A searchable registry of surname entries that have
been submitted by genealogists. Associated with each surname are
dates, locations, and information about how to contact the person
who submitted the surname.

RootsWeb - Simcoe County Message Board - I use this message
board to research in Simcoe County, Ontario, but you can
subscribe to receive postings in a mailing list from any district
or county in Canada.
- Canada
Genealogy Forum - GenForum message board for Canada. Search
by surname or post a message.

- Durham Region
Branch of the OGS - Holds meetings at 7:30p.m. in the
Oshawa Library
basement auditorium on the first Tuesday of each month, No
meetings are held in July and August.
- McLaughlin Branch

- Ontario Genealogy Society
- Non profit organization which promotes genealogical research in
Ontario. Excellent resource.
- Archives of
Ontario - Ontario Vital Statistics. Registrations of Births,
Marriages and Deaths, also holds census records, court records,
divorce, immigration, and land records.
- Simcoe Count Branch of
the OGS - Includes a searchable database of setters in
Simcoe, County.
- Ontario
GenWeb - Part of the Canada GenWeb Project. Contains links to
county and district GenWebs in the province of Ontario.
- Ontario
GenWeb Census Project - Transcriptions of the : 1851/52,
1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901, 1911 district and township census
for Ontario
- Federal Census
of 1871 (Ontario Index) - This database contains the names of
the heads of households in the Province of Ontario as they were
recorded in April 1871 in the official enumeration of the
population of Canada. The census returns record personal
information such as name, age, country or province of birth,
occupation, ethnic origin and religious denomination.
- Surnames of
Ontario - Post surnames being research in Ontario.
- Grey County
GenWeb - Genealogy sources for people with ancestors in Grey
County Ontario Canada.
- Ontario Roots - A
professional research service located in Toronto, Ontario. Also
offers free on-line databases include 1901 Census Finder Toronto,
microfilm list, more.
- Ontario
Locator - Discover which county or district you need for your
genealogical or historical research in Ontario.
- Ontario Vital
Statistics Project - Searchable database of Ontario birth and
death registrations ( 1869 to 1908 )has a good representation of
most Ontario counties and districts.
- Ontario Cemetery
Finding Aid - Searchable database consisting of the surnames,
cemetery name and location of over interments from several
thousand cemeteries in Ontario Canada.
- Northeastern
Ontario Canada Gravemarker Gallery - This site contains photographs
of all grave stones in all cemeteries in Nipissing and Parry Sound Districts,
plus parts of other Districts in Northeastern Ontario, Canada.
